Recreational drugs:
  • Alcohol.
  • Amphetamines.
  • Barbiturates.
  • Cocaine.
  • Marijuana.
  • Heroin and other opioids.
  • Nicotine.

For example, impotence is common in people with atherosclerosis and can later progress into heart disease. If the veins are unable to close during an erection, this can cause impotence as it hinders the erection from being maintained. This is called veno-occlusive dysfunction.

In people assigned male at birth:
  • Inability to achieve or maintain an erection (hard penis) for intercourse (erectile dysfunction).
  • Absent (anejaculation) or delayed ejaculation despite enough sexual stimulation.
  • Inability to control the timing of ejaculation (premature ejaculation).
