Iron products
What are Iron products?
Iron products are preparations of iron taken either by mouth or given by injection, to correct iron deficiency in humans. Iron is an essential element. It is a component of hemoglobin (in the red blood cells) and many enzymes in the body. Iron is necessary for transfer of oxygen in the body. Iron deficiency leads to anemia, a reduction in oxygen carrying pigment hemoglobin in the blood.
Iron (ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate, ferrous sulfate) is used to treat or prevent anemia (a lower than normal number of red blood cells) when the amount of iron taken in from the diet is not enough. Iron is a mineral that is available as a dietary supplement.
Three relatively new intravenous irons have been approved in the US, ferumoxytol, ferric carboxymaltose and Ferric Derisomaltose, providing an alternative to low molecular weight iron dextran for larger doses of iron to be administered as a single dose or two doses for more rapid iron replenishment.
Frequently used forms of iron in supplements include ferrous and ferric iron salts, such as ferrous sulfate, ferrous gluconate, ferric citrate, and ferric sulfate
