Anorectal preparations

What are Anorectal preparations?

Anorectal products generally contain a local anesthetic and a pain reliever or an anti-inflammatory agent in combination as an ointment or suppository. They are applied topically either to treat internal or external hemorrhoids. Ointments can be used on external and internal hemorrhoids, and suppositories are used inside the rectum to treat internal hemorrhoids. Other anorectal products are agents that are used to treat genital or anal warts.

Topical steroids, antibacterial soap, and topical capsaicin 0.006% cream are effective for the treatment of idiopathic pruritus ani. OnabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) injected into the internal anal sphincter, topical nitroglycerin, and topical calcium channel blockers are treatment options for anal fissures.

All bowel preparation regimens require exclusion of high residue foods for at least 48 hours and a diet of clear fluids only for 24 hours before the examination. This will require adjustment of insulin and oral hypoglycaemic medications in patients with diabetes.

Many conditions that cause anal pain also may cause rectal bleeding, which is usually more frightening than serious. The causes of anal pain usually can be easily diagnosed. Anal pain usually can be treated with nonprescription pain relievers and hot water soaks, also called sitz baths.
