What are Miscellaneous GI agents?

Gastrointestinal (GI) agents include many different classes of drugs that are used to treat gastrointestinal disorders. They can be classed as: 5-aminosalicylates, antacids, antidiarrheals, digestive enzymes, functional bowel disorder agents, gallstone solubilizing agents, GI stimulants, H. pylori eradication agents, H2 antagonists, laxatives and proton pump inhibitors. A gastrointestinal agents that does not fit into these categories is put in the class of miscellaneous GI agents.

A ‘Gastrointestinal Agent’ is a type of medication that is used to treat diseases related to the human digestive system, such as oral, esophageal, gastric, or intestinal diseases.

Gastrointestinal Medications
  • Antacids. Aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide (Mylanta, Maalox) Calcium carbonate (Tums, Rolaids, Chooz) 
  • Proton Pump Inhibitors. Omeprazole (Prilosec) Lansoprazole (Prevacid) 
  • Histamine2 Blockers. Cimetidine (Tagamet) 
  • Promotility Agents. Metoclopramide (Reglan)
