What are Phenylpiperazine antidepressants?

Phenylpiperazine antidepressants are drugs that act as serotonin (5-HT2) reuptake inhibitors and serotonin receptor blockers, or just as serotonin receptor blockers. There are two drugs in this class of antidepressants and their mechanism of action and side effect profiles are slightly different.

Phenylpiperazine antidepressants are used to treat depression.

What do Antidepressant Medications do? Antidepressant medications increase the activity of chemicals called neurotransmitters in the brain. Increasing the activity of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine seems to help lessen the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Fluoxetine is probably the best known SSRI (sold under the brand name Prozac). Other SSRIs include citalopram (Cipramil), escitalopram (Cipralex), paroxetine (Seroxat) and sertraline (Lustral).

Which SSRI antidepressants have the least side effects?
  1. Celexa. Overall, Celexa seems to be one of the best-tolerated SSRIs for many people. 
  2. Lexapro. Lexapro is closely related to Celexa. 
  3. Prozac. Prozac causes less weight gain than other SSRIs.
  4. Zoloft.

Zoloft (sertraline): Zoloft is highly effective, although some people find that it is more likely than other SSRIs to cause diarrhea. Zoloft is the most common depression medication; nearly 17% of those surveyed in the 2017 antidepressant use study reported that they had taken this medication.

Alprazolam (Xanax®) has approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help manage the following conditions: Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder. Panic disorder with or without agoraphobia.
