Heparin antagonists

What are Heparin antagonists?

Heparin antagonists are substances which inhibit the anticoagulant action of heparin. They may be used for the treatment of severe heparin overdosage.

A heparin antagonist is a substance, such as protamin, that is used to counteract the effects of heparin overdose by forming an insoluble complex with heparin.

Protamine is a medication used to reverse and neutralize the anticoagulant effects of heparin. Protamine is the specific antagonist that neutralizes heparin-induced anticoagulation.
