What are Oral nutritional supplements?

Oral nutritional supplements are products, which contain foods rich in energy and protein. These are generally available as liquid preparations so that they are easy to consume. Oral nutrition products are indicated for malnourished patients who have malignancy, chronic disease and/or anorexia.

They may or may not contain additional fibre, omega-3 fats, prebiotics, and probiotics. They are available at almost any grocery store, drug store, or online, and there are many different brands out there, including Boost®, Compleat®, Ensure®, Glucerna®, Isosource®, Premier Protein®, Rumble®, and Soylent®.

Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS) are sterile liquids, semi-solids or powders, which provide macro and micro nutrients. They are widely used within the acute and community health settings for individuals who are unable to meet their nutritional requirements through oral diet alone.

Oral nutritional supplements are used to provide extra nutrients for people who are unable to meet their nutritional requirements through their usual meals and drinks.
