What are Otic anti-infectives?

Otic anti-infectives are generally available as ear drops and contain anti-infective agents that either have antibacterial or antifungal activity. These agents either kill or inhibit bacterial or fungal growth. They are used to treat bacterial or fungal infections of the ear.

Otic steroids with anti-infectives are ear drops that have both steroids and anti-infectives. Steroids are effective anti-inflammatory agents and are used to treat pain and inflammation.

Anti-infectives are medicines that work to prevent or treat infections, they include antibacterials, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasitic medications.

How are otic antibiotics used? Otic antibiotics are solutions or suspensions that are topically administered into the ear canal. Otic antibiotics are used to treat or prevent infections in the following conditions or treatment procedures: Otitis externa: External ear infection.

Amoxicillin is a first-choice antibiotic for adults with otitis media. It’s typically taken by mouth 2 to 3 times daily for 5 to 10 days. Your symptoms should start to improve within 3 days after starting it. Augmentin is a common alternative if amoxicillin isn’t effective.

Topical steroids with anti-infectives are combination creams, ointments, gels, shampoos, or powders that contain both a steroid and an anti-infective agent and are used to treat infections of the skin or scalp that are red, itchy, or have minor swelling.

Hydrocortisone/neomycin/polymyxin B (Cortisporin, Cortomycin) Hydrocortisone/neomycin/polymyxin is an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent for otic use, available as a solution or a suspension.
