What are Otic preparations?

Otic preparations are products applied to or in the ear to treat conditions of the external and middle ear. These products are used to treat dermatitis of the ear, cerumen build up and ear infection.

Ototopical preparations are available for the treatment of obstruction, dermatitis, pain, and infection of the ear canal and the mastoid and tympanic structures. Most preparations contain alcohol and some type of mild acid, both of which provide nonspecific antiseptic activity against fungi and bacteria.

Ofloxacin otic solution is used to treat infections of the ear canal. It also is used to treat infections of the middle ear in patients with nonintact tympanic membranes (holes or tubes in the eardrums).

Ear drops are used for removing wax, water and impurities in the external auditory canal, to alleviate problems (pain, redness, itching) and to prevent diseases in the external auditory canal.

Neomycin, polymyxin B, and hydrocortisone combination ear drops is used to treat infections of the ear canal and to help provide relief from redness, irritation, and discomfort of certain ear problems.
