Vaccine combinations
What are Vaccine combinations?
Vaccine combinations merge antigens that prevent different diseases or that protect against multiple strains of infectious agents causing the same disease, into a single product. This reduces the number of injections required to prevent some diseases.
Examples of combination vaccines are: DTap (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), trivalent IPV (three strains of inactivated polio vaccine), MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), DTap-Hib, and Hib-Hep B. Often, more than one shot will be given during the same doctor’s visit, usually in separate limbs (e.g. one in each arm).
The combined 7-vaccine series provides immunization against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliovirus, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis b, Haemophilus influenzae type b, varicella, and pneumococcal infections. See Sources and Definitions, Vaccination.
Note that there are two situations where vaccines cannot be given together: People who have anatomic asplenia (who do not have a spleen) or functional asplenia (whose spleen is not functioning properly) or have HIV should not get the meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13)together.
Unless the parent or caregiver expresses a preference for MMRV vaccine, CDC recommends that MMR vaccine and varicella vaccine should be administered as separate injections for the first dose in children 12-47 months of age.
The 6-in-1 vaccine helps protect against serious illnesses like polio and whooping cough. It’s given to babies when they’re 8, 12 and 16 weeks old.
The full name of the 5-in-1 vaccine used in the UK was DTaP/IPV/Hib. This stands for ‘Diphtheria, Tetanus, acellular Pertussis, Inactivated Polio Vaccine, Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b)’. The 5-in-1 protects against these five different diseases.
ALPHA-7/MB™-1 IS THE ONLY SINGLE-DOSE, SEVEN-WAY CLOSTRIDIUM VACCINE WITH ADDITIONAL PINKEYE PROTECTION. • A single, 2mL dose of ALPHA-7/MB-1 provided protection against a virulent Moraxella bovis challenge. Following the challenge, calves vaccinated with ALPHA-7/MB-1 had significantly lower (p = 0.0003) eye.
