What are Biologicals?

Biologicals are diagnosic, pregentive, or therapeutic preparations derived or obtained from living organisms and their product, including serum, vaccine, antigen and antitoxin.

Biologicals are a diverse group of medicines which includes vaccines, growth factors, immune modulators, monoclonal antibodies, as well as products derived from human blood and plasma.

There are four types of biologics, each with a unique inflammatory target and its own risks and benefits.
  • Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF) Inhibitors.
  • B-Cell Inhibitors. 
  • Interleukin Inhibitors. 
  • Selective Co-stimulation Modulators.

Types of biological therapy include immunotherapy (such as cytokines, cancer treatment vaccines, and some antibodies) and some targeted therapies. Also called biological response modifier therapy, biotherapy, and BRM therapy.
