General Information
What are Hydantoin anticonvulsants?
Hydantoin anticonvulsants are structurally related to barbiturates. They have an allantoin heterocyclic base. Hydantoins slow the synaptic transmission by blocking sodium channels from recovering from the inactivated state, and inhibits neurons from firing. This stops the repeated excitation of cells that results in seizures.
Hydantoin anticonvulsants are used to treat a wide range of seizures types.
Hydantoin (2,4-Imidazolidinedione Glycolylurea), is an heterocyclic organic compoundthat has anticonvulsant properties and is used as treatment for seizure disorders or as muscle relaxant in drug intoxication associated problems (Donald and Easton, 1972).
The hydantoin group can be found in several medicinally important compounds. In pharmaceuticals, hydantoin derivatives form a class of anticonvulsants; phenytoin and fosphenytoin both contain hydantoin moieties and are both used as anticonvulsants in the treatment of seizure disorders.
A hydantoin antiepileptic used to control tonic-clonic and complex partial seizures. An antiepileptic agent used for the management of generalized convulsive status epilepticus and prevention and treatment of seizures occurring during neurosurgery. A phenylhydantoin used to treat refractory partial epilepsy.

Description :
Hydantoin anticonvulsants are drugs used to control seizures by stabilizing neuronal membranes and reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
Examples: phenytoin, fosphenytoin.
Uses: mainly in epilepsy and sometimes for seizure prevention after head injury or surgery.
SEO meta description:
Hydantoin anticonvulsants like phenytoin help control seizures by stabilizing brain activity.
