Miscellaneous diuretics
What are Miscellaneous diuretics?
Diuretics are drugs that increase the volume of urine produced by promoting the excretion of salt and water from the kidneys. There are several types of diuretics, each working in a distinct way.
Diuretics are used to reduce the edema caused due to salt and water retention in disorders of the heart, kidneys, liver or lungs. They are used commonly in treatment of hypertension.
Typically, the pharmacological group consists of five classes: thiazide diuretics, loop diuretics, potassium-sparing diuretics, osmotic diuretics, and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.
- chlorthalidone.
- ethacrynic acid (Edecrin)
- furosemide (Lasix)
- hydrochlorothiazide.
- indapamide (Lozide)
- metolazone (Zaroxolyn)
Antidiuretics reduce urine volume, particularly in diabetes insipidus (DI), which is one of their main indications. The antidiuretic hormone class includes vasopressin (ADH), argipressin, desmopressin, lypressin, ornipressin, oxytocin, and terlipressin. Miscellaneous others include chlorpropamide and carbamazepine.
