Miscellaneous sex hormones
What are Miscellaneous sex hormones?
Sex hormones are steroid hormones that are mainly produced by the testes or the ovaries. Sex hormones are responsible for controlling reproductive function and sexual development. Estrogens and progestins are female sex hormones and androgens are male sex hormones.
Sex hormones can be divided into different subgroups. Any sex hormones that do not fit into the subgroups are called miscellaneous sex hormones.
The main reproductive hormones estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone are instrumental in sexuality and fertility. They are responsible for pregnancy, puberty, menstruation, menopause, sex drive, sperm production and more. These hormones are produced in the ovaries (in females) and testes (in males).
In many contexts, the two main classes of sex hormones are androgens and estrogens, of which the most important human derivatives are testosterone and estradiol, respectively. Other contexts will include progestogens as a third class of sex steroids, distinct from androgens and estrogens.
Testosterone measured in amniotic fluid samples also is higher in male than in female fetuses, particularly near midgestation, with one study finding a significant sex difference in samples taken between gestational weeks 15 and 21, but not weeks 36 and 40
Although there are many different hormones in the human body, they can be divided into three classes based on their chemical structure: lipid-derived, amino acid-derived, and peptide hormones.
Hormones usually work internally, and they only have a direct effect on the individual that is secreting them. Pheromones, unlike most other hormones, are ectohormones. They are secreted outside the body, and they influence the behavior of another individual.
The main hormones responsible for sexual and reproductive health are estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone. These hormones play critical roles in pregnancy, puberty, menstruation, sex drive, sperm production and more—and interestingly, all three are present in males and females.
