What are Otic anesthetics?

Otic anesthetics are agents that act locally to relieve pain in the ears. Some of these agents are available with other medicines such as analgesics, decongestants, etc. They are generally available as ear drops.

Antipyrine and benzocaine otic is used to relieve ear pain and swelling caused by middle ear infections. It may be used along with antibiotics to treat an ear infection. It is also used to help remove a build up of ear wax in the ear. Antipyrine and benzocaine are in a class of medications called analgesics.

Use 3 drops of topical 2% lidocaine drops or benzocaine to provide rapid pain relief for children with acute otitis media.

Neomycin, polymyxin B, and hydrocortisone combination ear drops is used to treat infections of the ear canal and to help provide relief from redness, irritation, and discomfort of certain ear problems.

Otic corticosteroids (cortisone-like medicines) are used in the ear to relieve the redness, itching, and swelling caused by certain ear problems. Otic corticosteroids are available only with your doctor’s prescription. This product is available in the following dosage forms: Oil.
