Ophthalmic surgical agents

What are Ophthalmic surgical agents?

Ophthalmic surgical agents are used during surgical procedures involving the eyes. An ophthalmic viscoelastic agent is a gel injected into the anterior chamber during ophthalmic surgery to maintain the depth of the chamber, protect the corneal endothelium, and stabilize the vitreous.

Lidocaine, procaine, and mepivacaine are commonly used local anesthetics for eye surgery. Longer-acting agents such as bupivacaine and etidocaine are often mixed with other local anesthetics to prolong the duration of effect.
